HARI RAYA 2011
HARI RAYA 2011

We were delighted to be able to deliver food hampers, Hari Raya cookies and cordial to 25 families and monetary gifts for 71 children, thanks to the generosity of The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, Kak Su from Villa Molek, Rosmiza bt Shuib, Rafeah bt Ahmad, Truly Asian Cafe and cash donations from two donors, who wish to remain anonymous.

Members of the Management Team of RLYC joined Belinda, Lyn and Sheila on delivery day and despite the torrential rain all the deliveries were completed in time for this special occasion.

Earlier in the week Lyn distributed a selection of pre-loved baju kurungs to some of the families.

Our thanks to everyone who made this possible.

TAMIL SCHOOL AT KISAP

WE ARE PLEASED TO HAVE HELPED THE SCHOOL IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS AND LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING OUR SUPPORT IN THE FUTURE

ENGLISH LESSONS
In response to a request for help with English lessons we introduced Teviot Fairservis, an American lady, recently arrived in Langkawi. Teviot has started to teach for an hour a week, on a voluntary basis, giving the children the benefit of her vast experience of teaching around the world.

READING BOOKS AND WHITE BOARDS
We visited the school with Trevor & Rhonda McPhee, who have retired to their native Australia. They wanted to help the community of Langkawi and their kind donation enabled us to purchase three large whiteboards and over 40 books for the school.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS
The Headmaster and his staff identified children whose families need help with school uniforms for 2011 and we are pleased to have been able to support these children.

We were pleased to attend the Annual Prize Giving Ceremony and surprised to be presented with a certificate and plaque in appreciation of our support for the school.

ART CLASSES

We are fortunate to have Malaysian artist Herbert Pereira living on Langkawi, as he has  been teaching art to children at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Ladang Sungai Raya in the Kisap area. The lucky children selected all come from underprivileged families and showed an interest in learning.

The Charity Club Langkawi Club provided all art materials, Herbert gives his time free of charge, and the school provides encouragement and a classroom, to give these children a rare opportunity to develop their talent.

The class meets once a week, after school hours and they have just completed a course in pencil drawing and perspective.  During this time, under Herbert’s expert eye, the children were tutored very closely to acquire a more sensitive touch in using a pencil, and to begin their education in conveying a three dimensional image in a two dimensional medium, while also starting to learn about the importance of light.

The next part of the course will see the same group of children experimenting with colour, as Herbert teaches them the fundamentals of painting.

Headmaster Mr Sithirai Selvan commented that the school was very happy with the art class as Herbert was doing a great job and because it provided the children with a very different experience that would otherwise not be available to them. He was  very grateful for The Charity Club’s involvement in helping Indian school children in this way.  The headmaster went on to say that he would very much like to see this as a continuing programme at his school.

We are grateful to Michelle who has co-ordinated these classes with Herbert, attended every one and on a couple of occasions stood in as teacher when Herbert was ill/away on business to avoid cancelling the classes and disappointing the children.

Tunku Putra Secondary School Sports Sponsorship

In 2010 Tunku Putra Secondary School in Padang Matsirat identified boys with a flair for sports and offered them the opportunity to have extra tuition after school. This scheme also involved other subjects and it was appropriate for the chosen children to live in the hostel as all classes/training were undertaken after school hours. Several of the children who wished to take part could not meet the costs of the hostel and The Charity Club Langkawi funded these costs.

Lyn and Sheila were invited to the school to hand over the funds and met with some of the boys who had benefited
from this sponsorship scheme.

 MAH
PROJECTS - MAH CHARITY BASH FUNDS

We are pleased to have had the opportunity to administer some of the funds raised by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) - Kedah & Perlis Chapter 2009 Charity Bash.

We identified the needs, costed the projects for approval by MAH and once approved, managed each project.

The funds have been well spent, used frugally and most importantly, have improved the day to day lives of many underprivileged families in Langkawi.

We could not have undertaken these projects without the generosity of MAH and its members in Langkawi, other event sponsors and the guests who attended the event generously supporting the Grand Raffle and Silent Auction. Our thanks to you all.

We look forward to continuing to work with MAH during 2011.

Please click on this link to the PDF file which details the projects in more detail.
